When “Enough” Is a Radical Statement

In our American-style Capitalist society, the default of, well, pretty much anything is usually "more, more, MORE". (That way they can keep selling you things. More selling = more profit.)

In such a world, "enough" is a radical notion.

Because "enough" means rest. It means peace and quiet. Long afternoons in the sun. It means NOT BEING PRODUCTIVE. (And in Capitalism, that's a mortal sin.)

You can't monetize "enough", and our society doesn't know what to do with that.

So when you know what your "enough" is (and have the courage to rest once you get there), that's a radical idea. A statement of purpose and mindfulness. It means you're taking off the blinders and going against the flow.

My question to you:

Do you know what "enough" is, when it comes to money?

Do you know:

  • How much revenue is enough?

  • How many sales are enough?

  • How much is enough to pay yourself?

If you don't know the answers, that's okay! This may be the first time you've ever really thought about it.

I encourage you to take a few minutes and jot down some numbers for paying yourself. You'll need to include basic necessities like rent, health insurance, groceries, clothes, etc, of course.

But don't forget that we aren't just robots, designed to eat, sleep, and work.

We're humans who like to love, play, laugh, and have joyful experiences. And those things should be included in your enough number. Enough includes funds for:

  • Travel

  • Taking time off to do nothing

  • Hobbies

  • "Extravagant" gifts*

  • Contributing to important causes

  • More travel

  • More hobbies

And to be clear: enough isn't about settling.

It's not about getting by or making do with less.

It's about intention. About knowing your values and priorities. About living gloriously and exquisitely. About purposefully choosing what's important to you and leaving the rest.

Once you know your personal enough number (ie the amount you want to pay yourself each month so you can rest, sew, travel, and gift to your heart's content), you can land on an "enough" number for your business. And say "No" to sexy-but-ultimately-unhelpful goals of "six-figures" and "be a millionaire".
